Your home security depends, first and foremost on the strength and effectiveness of your door locks. If they are weak or faulty, your home becomes vulnerable. At Peifer Safe & Lock, we want your home to be as secure as possible, and to help you keep it that way, we’ve put together a list of helpful tips, “keys” if you will, to keeping your locks in good working order.
Lubricate Locks Annually
A simple, once-a-year step, make sure that each year your lock gets thoroughly lubricated. This doesn’t even have to be done professionally. Simply be sure to choose the right form of lubricant. Locksmiths advise against petroleum-based ones, which may eventually gum up the workings.
Clean Lock Exterior
Occasional, basic cleaning of the outside of the lock can be done with just some mild detergent and a damp rag. You don’t want to use an abrasive cleaner, which can wear away the protective coating covering most locks.
Ensure the Door Is Hung Properly
This one is as important for your door as for your lock. If it’s hung incorrectly, your door can cause all kinds of problems for your lock; grating in the bolts and strike plates, bending or warping of dead bolts or the latch, and poor binding. Even when your sure that your door has been hung correctly, check occasionally to ensure that it hasn’t loosened with time.
Check Strike Plates & Latches
A simple visual check will often go a long way towards preventing serious problems. You can check the important lock parts for signs of wear, or deterioration, and see if any parts are loose. It should be clear whether any issues can be corrected with basic means, or require professional attention.
We hope these tips help you keep your locks in their best shape. Your Peifer Safe & Lock team is ready to help for any problems that you might have! Contact us today to learn more about lock maintenance, and our other services.
